De-Extinction Deli (To Go)<\/strong> builds on the original\u00a0De-Extinction Deli market stand<\/a> by offering visitors the opportunity to write and mail pre-addressed\u00a0postcards \u00a0to leading researchers and thinkers in the field of\u00a0 de-extinction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The De-Extinction Deli is a fantastical market stand designed to highlight the emerging technologies, risks, and outcomes of the growing movement to revive, rear and possibly eat, extinct species.\u00a0 Visitors can learn about the de-extinction debate from the Deli\u2019s representatives and through the Deli\u2019s interactive environment. The market stand includes butcher paper infographic take-aways, representations of extinct animal habitats, and an ongoing \u00a0poll, tallying public opinions\u00a0about\u00a0the art and science of\u00a0 de- extinction. Visitors receive\u00a0badges indicating their choices and have the option to\u00a0write and mail pre-addressed\u00a0postcards \u00a0to leading researchers and thinkers in the field of\u00a0 de-extinction.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> This version of the project is an homage to Stewart Brand\u2019s earliest\u00a0projects NASA Images of Earth. “In 1966, Brand campaigned to have NASA release the then-rumored satellite image of the entire Earth as seen from space. He sold and distributed buttons for 25 cents each[6] asking, “Why haven’t we seen a photograph of the whole Earth yet?”. <\/strong>(wikipedia<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span>Mr. Brand is one of the\u00a0postcard recipients.<\/p>\n

The Whole Earth photo campaign fascinating because it was both hopeful about the power of metaphors to change people\u2019s minds and paranoid about the activities and intentions of those in power. He was really asking of all of humanity \u201cWhat are we capable of?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stewart Brand is probably one of the most important artist of the last half century (even if I don\u2019t always agree with his perspectives and positions). Paralleling the hopeful\/paranoid question that Stewart Brand asked about NASA’s intentions, we are now asking a hopeful\/paranoid question about the intentions The Long Now Foundation, Wyss Institute and others in the “De-Extinction movement”. Will we de-extinct animals? Why? Who or what are they for? Will they live in zoos or in rewilded\u00a0habitats? If we ate many of them to death the first time around, what makes us think we won\u2019t eat some of them the second time around? Can we be hopeful that we WON\u2019T eat de-extinct animals the second time around?<\/p>\n
